Why do I feel behind?
Because you are measuring your whole life against the one part of other people's lives they chose to show you.
This is the most common feeling I hear and almost nobody says it out loud, which is exactly why it feels like a personal defect rather than the near-universal experience it is.
Behind what, exactly?
There is no schedule. There never was one. The timeline you are failing to meet was assembled out of other people's announcements, and announcements are the edited version. Nobody posts the year they spent unsure.
Why it gets worse with age
At 25 everyone is visibly in progress. By 45 the presentation has hardened — people have titles, houses, settled-looking lives — and the gap between the presentation and the interior widens enormously. You are comparing your interior to their exterior, and losing a contest that is not being held.
What actually helps
Ask one person you consider ahead of you how they actually feel about where they are. I have had this conversation many times and the answer is almost never what the outside suggested. It recalibrates faster than any amount of reasoning.
The one useful version of this feeling
If it points at something specific — a skill you keep not learning, a decision you keep not making — then it is information and you should act on it this week. If it is general, it is just comparison, and comparison has never once moved anybody forward.
You are further along than it feels.
