How can I actually make money with AI?
By solving a problem you already understand for people who already pay you. Not by becoming an engineer.
Almost everyone asking this starts in the wrong place: learning the tools first, then hunting for a way to sell them. It rarely works, because the tools are now the commodity and the understanding is the scarce part.
Where does the money actually come from?
From knowing which problem is expensive. Twenty years in insurance operations, logistics, nursing, accounts — that is knowledge of where a process wastes money, and nobody graduating this year has it. The earning is in pointing the tools at that.
What does that look like in practice?
Three shapes cover most of it. Doing a task faster than the people who currently do it and charging for the task, not the hours. Building a small tool for the industry you came from. Or being the person inside an organisation who understands both the work and the tools, which is a role that barely existed three years ago and is badly underfilled.
How much do I need to learn first?
Less than you think, and you will learn it faster with a paying problem in front of you. Pick one repetitive task from the work you already know and get a tool to do part of it this week. That single piece of evidence is what conversations turn on.
What I got wrong: I assumed I needed the full technical picture before I could charge anything. The people earning first were the ones who solved one narrow thing and got paid while they learned the rest.
