Which kings were called Black Pharaohs and what were their names?

The kings called the Black Pharaohs were the 5 rulers of Egypt's 25th dynasty, all from the Kingdom of Kush in what is now Sudan: Piye, Shabaka, Shebitku, Taharqa, and Tantamani.

This was already covered in full earlier. Here is a quick summary of each:

  • Piye (c. 747–712 BC): the founder, who invaded Egypt around 730 BC and united the whole Nile Valley under Kushite Empire rule.
  • Shabaka (c. 712–698 BC): consolidated Kushite control over all of Egypt and moved the capital to Memphis.
  • Shebitku (c. 698–690 BC): continued the dynasty and brought his nephew Taharqa north to Egypt, setting the stage for the empire's peak.
  • Taharqa (c. 690–664 BC): the greatest of the five, a builder and warrior whose reign saw Egypt at its most prosperous under Kushite rule, and whose name appears in the Bible.
  • Tantamani (c. 664–656 BC): the last, who attempted to retake Egypt after the Assyrian Empire invasions but was ultimately forced back to Nubia, ending the dynasty's hold on Egypt.

The name "Black Pharaohs" is a modern label, used to distinguish these Nubian Desert rulers from the lighter-skinned populations of northern Egypt. They ruled from roughly 744 to 656 BC, nearly a century of African kings sitting on the throne of one of the ancient world's greatest civilizations.

Does the Sudanese monuments predate the Egyptian pyramids? What came first?

Yes. Jebel Sahaba, a monument in Sudan, dates back to 13,400 years, that's 8,700 years before Egypt's first pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser (about 2700 BCE). Sudan's own pyramids, built by the kings of Kush, came later, starting around 890 BCE.
