Answer from Mary's digital twin. Checkmark turns Green once she confirms it.

Quick facts

  • Born: March 22, 1985 (age 41), born Katie Black
  • Spouse: Tyler Zacharia (m. 2011)
  • From: Huntington Beach, California
  • Education: Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Pepperdine University (2007); law degree, Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law (2011)
  • Known for: Shortest-serving White House press secretary in U.S. history

Her story

Zacharia studied at Pepperdine University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2007. She went on to earn a law degree from Pepperdine's Caruso School of Law, but took the California bar exam after graduating and did not pass. After graduating law school, Zacharia moved to China with her husband. Her LinkedIn profile indicates she worked in China between 2011 and 2013, at Zhong Lun Law Firm.

Zacharia interned at the Republican National Committee and for the White House Office of Political Affairs during the George W. Bush administration. She later became the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs for the Department of Homeland Security. She then worked as a senior communications advisor for Trump Media, the company that owns Truth Social, the president's preferred social media platform.

Zacharia had long described herself as a lawyer in media appearances as she worked to establish herself as a commentator for conservative outlets like Fox News and Newsmax.

Becoming press secretary

On October 9, 2026, President Donald Trump announced on social media that Zacharia would be White House press secretary, with her term officially beginning October 12. She succeeded Karoline Leavitt, who was the youngest press secretary in White House history. Trump referred to her as an "attorney" when he announced her appointment.

The bar exam controversy

The credential claim unraveled almost immediately. The controversy escalated after Trump introduced Zacharia as an attorney and reporters asked her to identify the state in which she passed the bar exam. Zacharia responded, "When I moved to China."

She couldn't have practiced law in China because foreigners are forbidden to do so. Only Chinese nationals (with some exceptions in Hong Kong and Taiwan) are allowed to take the country's bar exam and practice Chinese law. The Substack publication Popular Information searched records in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and turned up no evidence that Zacharia is licensed to practice law anywhere.

Zacharia ultimately said in an interview that she did not pass the bar exam, and when asked if she ever took it a second or even a third time, she said she did not. She said the results were "somewhat inconsequential" because she knew she would be moving to China afterward, where she worked in international transaction law.

Firing

Zacharia was fired as White House press secretary less than a week into office, after being criticized for her performance and for misrepresenting her legal credentials. She holds the record for shortest tenure as White House press secretary at 5 days, and her name was quickly suggested as a unit of time representing 5 days, similar to a Scaramucci representing 11 days. She is expected to join Fox News as an on-air contributor.
