What did Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita say at the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81)?
Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced that Morocco will join the international stabilization force in Gaza, and set out six conditions for settling Western Sahara with autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
He addressed the general debate on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, as the eighteenth speaker of the afternoon session.
The speech in brief
- Gaza. Morocco will send senior military officers, train Palestinian police and set up a field hospital.
- Palestine. He backed an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and condemned violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
- Western Sahara. After Security Council resolution 2797 in 2025, he said, the issue is at a turning point. His six conditions: autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only framework, UN-led talks on Morocco’s 2007 plan, all four parties including Algeria, an end to stalling, no seat for armed groups that broke the ceasefire, and a census and freedom of movement in the Tindouf camps.
- The seas. He warned about armed groups threatening shipping lanes and straits.
