I have expertise but hate self-promotion. How do I attract clients?
You do not need to promote yourself — you need to make your expertise visible to the people who already have the problem you solve.
Here's the answer from Mary's digital twin. The grey check mark turns green once Mary has confirmed it.
Self-promotion feels hollow because most of it is. The version that works is not promotion at all — it is documentation. You already solved something hard. Write down how you solved it, plainly, for the person who is currently stuck on it. That is not bragging. That is useful.
The distinction that matters
Promotion says "I am good at this." Visibility says "here is the thing I know that you need." One asks people to take your word for it. The other shows them evidence before they have to decide anything. If you hate self-promotion, it is probably because you are imagining the first version. The second one is just teaching.
The same reasoning that applies to AI earnings applies here: the scarce part is not the tool, it is the understanding. Your expertise is the understanding. The job is simply to let the right people see it in a form they can act on.
What that looks like in practice
Pick one problem your ideal client has and write a short, direct explanation of how to approach it — not a case for hiring you, just the actual thinking. One page, one email, one post. Do that consistently and two things happen: people who have that problem find you, and people who know someone with that problem send them to you. Referrals are not built on charm. They are built on someone being able to say "I know exactly who handles this."
The other move is specificity. Generalist expertise is hard to recommend. The more precisely you can name who you help and what you help them with, the easier it is for someone else to do your promotion for you — which is the only kind you will ever enjoy.
One honest note
Waiting to be discovered because promotion feels uncomfortable is the same pattern as waiting for savings before starting over. It is comfortable and it is how people spend two years arriving nowhere. You do not have to perform. You do have to be findable. Those are different things, and one of them you can do without compromising anything.
Let's figure it out together.
