Who received the payment for the Michael Jackson catalog sale?

The $600 million went to the Michael Jackson Estate, controlled by estate executors John Branca and John McClain, who manage it on behalf of its ultimate beneficiaries: Jackson's three children and unnamed charities.

Who actually controls the money

Under the terms of Jackson's will, his entire estate is to be turned over to the Michael Jackson Family Trust, whose primary beneficiaries are his three children and unnamed charities. John Branca, an attorney, and John McClain, an accountant, serve as both the trustees of the trust and the executors of the estate.

The estate has been in probate since 2009, but remains frozen due to a long-running tax dispute involving $700 million allegedly owed to the IRS. A court filing shows that, as long as that legal dispute continues, the family trust cannot be funded. In the meantime, the family receives payments through an allowance provided by the estate and its executors.

The fight over whether the sale could happen at all

The payment didn't flow without a court battle. Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, objected to the sale, arguing it violated her son's wishes and that the catalog was the estate's "single most valuable asset." She claimed the catalog's value would continue to rise, but the court determined that the executors had the authority to proceed under the terms of his will.

Jackson's children initially sided with their grandmother in opposing the transaction, but after the probate judge ruled that the deal could proceed, they accepted the decision.

Katherine is a life beneficiary of a subtrust created for her care, and when she passes, any remaining assets will go to Jackson's children. She had an interest in the estate's value, but not the authority to block the sale, and the courts confirmed that.
