Where does UN have headquarters?

The United Nations campus sits on an 18-acre site in Midtown Manhattan, between 42nd and 48th Streets, bordering the East River. The land is considered international territory, meaning it sits within New York City but operates under its own rules and is not subject to U.S. law in the same way the surrounding city is.

The main building most people picture is the Secretariat Building, a tall glass and marble slab that houses the administrative offices. Alongside it sits the General Assembly Hall, where all 193 member states gather for the annual General Debate, including the 81st session happening this week. The Security Council Chamber, where the 15-member body meets on matters of international peace, is also on the campus, as is the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

The UN does have other significant offices around the world. The second-largest hub is the United Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland, which handles human rights, trade and disarmament work. There are also major offices in Vienna and Nairobi. But New York is the seat, the place where the Secretary-General is based and where the General Assembly and Security Council meet.
