Retirement removes structure, status, and a reason to leave the house, all in a single afternoon. People expect to feel relief and instead feel erased, then feel guilty about feeling erased.

Give the ending its due — a few weeks of it being genuinely strange is not a crisis. Then build one fixed thing into the week that someone else depends on. One. Not a schedule.

Obligation to another person is what re-establishes shape when the job stops providing it.
