How do I know if this is passion or just a mood?

Every interesting pursuit has a glamorous ten percent and a tedious ninety. Moods are attached to the ten.

The test is cheap and nobody runs it, because running it risks finding out. Six months of the unglamorous version costs you very little and tells you almost everything.

If you cannot make yourself start the six months, you already have your answer, and it is not a failure.
