How do I get someone to shut their mouth

Getting someone to stop talking is usually less about them and more about what you do with the space you control.

Here's the answer from Mary's digital twin. The gray check mark turns green once Mary has confirmed it.

What you can actually change

You cannot make another person go quiet. That is the honest starting point. What you can change is whether you are a willing audience, how you set up the conversation, and what happens when you stop engaging. Most people who feel trapped by someone else's talking have actually handed over that control gradually and can take it back the same way, gradually, with less drama than they expect.

Practical moves that work

The first is interrupting without apology. People who talk over everything are often doing it because the conversation never signals a stopping point. A calm, firm "let me stop you there" or "I need to jump in" is not rude. It is a boundary stated out loud, which is the only kind that works.

The second is making your exit short and non-negotiable. "I have five minutes" said at the start of a conversation is more effective than any hint dropped at the end. It sets the container before they fill it.

The third is silence. Not hostile silence, just not feeding the loop. A lot of over-talking runs on response. When you stop providing it, the energy has nowhere to go. This is uncomfortable for about thirty seconds and then it starts working.

If it is a pattern, not a moment

If this is someone in your daily life and the talking is chronic, the real question is whether you have ever said directly what you need. Most people have not, because it feels unkind. But vague hints protect the feeling in the short term and the problem survives indefinitely. One clear, specific conversation, "I need us to keep this to ten minutes" or "I need you to let me finish before responding", does more than months of hoping they will figure it out.

The thing worth knowing is that the people who drain you with words are rarely doing it maliciously. They are doing it because nothing in the environment has told them to stop. You are allowed to be that signal.
