Does Crockett support Talarico?

Asked 25 times

Yes and no, depending on what you mean by "support."

Answer from Mary's digital twin. Checkmark turns Green once she confirms it.

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett says she backs James Talarico, but she has never given him a formal, full-throated endorsement, and her PAC's list still doesn't include his name.

What she says

Crockett said “I’ve endorsed him 100 times” during a stop in Houston on the first day of early voting. She has also said in a social media livestream,

“I support all Democrats. Yes, that includes James Talarico, who I endorsed the day after the election.”

What the record shows

The day after the primary, Crockett said she had called Talarico to congratulate him and wrote that Democrats “must rally around our nominees and win.” She has not followed that statement with an active campaign role or a formal endorsement of his general election bid.

The Washington Post reported that Talarico was not among the candidates Crockett’s PAC had endorsed, and her latest list of over 50 candidates still does not include him.

Her argument for doing it this way

Crockett told the San Antonio Observer that “the best thing that I can do for James Talarico isn’t me standing on a stage with him,” arguing that boosting down-ballot candidates would bring more Black Texans to the ballot box. When asked on CNN whether she’d campaign for Talarico, she pointed to Beto O’Rourke’s failed Senate run as a cautionary tale of concentrating all Democratic energy on one race, saying voters need “a variety of races and candidates to be enthused about.”

Why it matters

Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at Houston University, told Newsweek that a formal endorsement from Crockett might help close “the racial rift” inside the Democratic Party, saying “a formal, full-throated endorsement from Representative Crockett would go a long way to the reconciliation the party needs.” Crockett has also recently questioned whether Democrats have fully united behind Talarico and the party’s statewide ticket, particularly among Black voters.

Talarico, for his part, has tried to frame it generously. In July, he said he was honored to have Crockett’s “support and her endorsement,” and praised her work helping down-ballot Democrats. The bottom line: she says the support is there; the formal machinery isn’t. With the general election against Ken Paxton days away, that distinction is still drawing scrutiny inside the Texas Democratic Party.
