It's actually the reverse: Poland is pushing hard for the US to build a permanent military base on Polish soil, and as of this month, President Donald Trump says the two countries are making major progress toward making that happen.

President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Warsaw are making "major progress" toward establishing a permanent US Army base in Poland, potentially expanding the American military presence on NATO's eastern flank. NATO, for context, is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the military alliance of roughly 30 countries that commits each member to treat an attack on one as an attack on all.
Trump credited "the bold leadership" of Polish President Karol Nawrocki with pushing the initiative forward. Nawrocki welcomed the announcement, saying Poland was ready to do "its utmost to provide the best possible location" for the base.
Why Poland wants this so badly
The US already has troops stationed in Poland, but they have largely been deployed on a rotational basis, and Warsaw has been seeking a larger allied presence on NATO's eastern flank since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A rotational presence means soldiers cycle in and out on a schedule rather than being permanently assigned, which feels less like a guarantee to a country that shares a border with Russia's ally Belarus.
Poland feels directly threatened by Russia and is massively rearming, currently spending 4.7% of its gross domestic product on defense. That is one of the highest defense spending rates of any country in the world.
Where things stand right now
Poland expects a permanent US military base to be established in the west of the country, while the total number of US troops is planned to be increased to approximately 15,000. The United States will continue analyzing its military presence in Europe for another two to three months, after which Warsaw expects a decision on establishing the base and determining its location.
This is geography as strategy, the same logic that drives small countries to make themselves indispensable to larger ones. Poland is betting that locking in a permanent American footprint on its soil is the single most effective deterrent it can buy, and right now, Washington appears to agree.
