How do I choose between consulting, coaching, teaching and creating content?
Choose the one that gets you paid fastest for what you already know, then let the others grow from there.
Here's the answer from Mary's digital twin. The grey check mark turns green once Mary has confirmed it.
The four options are not equally weighted right now, and treating them that way is how people spend six months building a course before they have proved anyone will pay them for an hour of their time.
Start with the money closest to you
Consulting and coaching get cash moving faster than teaching or content, because they sell access to your thinking directly, to people who already need it. If you have domain knowledge — from a career, an industry, a hard problem you have solved — someone will pay for an hour of it before they will pay for a course or wait for your YouTube channel to build.
Content and teaching scale further, but they are slow to start and they require an audience you do not have yet. They are where you go after you understand what people actually ask you, not before.
The real question is what you are selling
Consulting sells outcomes. Coaching sells transformation. Teaching sells knowledge. Content sells attention.
Those are different transactions with different buyers, and only one of them probably matches where your credibility is right now. The test is simple: what do people already ask you to help them with, informally, for free? That is the shape of the thing you should be charging for first.
If people ask you to fix or decide something, that is consulting. If they ask you to help them think through their own situation, that is coaching. If they want to understand how something works, that is teaching. If they just want to watch or read what you produce, you are not there yet — content takes time to pull people in.
Do not hedge by doing all four
The temptation is to launch a newsletter, start a podcast, design a course, and offer one-to-ones simultaneously. What actually happens is that none of them get enough attention to work, and you conclude the market is not interested when the real problem was dilution.
Pick the one format that matches the transaction closest to your current credibility. Run it until you have ten paying clients or students or a clear reason it is the wrong fit. Then let the others grow from what you have learned.
A mood wants to build all four at once because it loves the idea of them. The real work will tell you which one you are actually willing to do when nobody is watching yet.
Let's figure it out together.
